Immaterial Property Rights, Product Cycles and Non-Diversifiable Risk

چکیده

In this study, I examine immaterial property rights in an economy where R&D firms innovate and imitate and households face nondiversifiable risk. Some property rights postpone the expected time an innovation will be imitated (e.g. increase the “length” of an innovation), while the others protect the imitator’s profits after a successful imitation (i.e. increase the “width” of an innovation). The main findings are as follows. Property rights that generate “short” and “wide” innovations also speed up economic growth. The smaller the households’ rate of risk aversion, the “longer” and “narrower” the welfare-maximizing innovations. Journal of Economic Literature: L11, L16, O31, O34

Optimal Patent Length and Patent Width for an Economy with Creative Destruction and Non-Diversifiable Risk

This study examines optimal public policy in a product cycle model where R&D firms innovate and imitate and households face nondiversifiable risk. The government controls product cycles by two policy instruments: patent length, i.e. the expected time an innovation is imitated, and patent width, i.e. the innovator’s profit after a successful imitation relative to that before. The main results ar...

Product Cycle, Knowledge Capital and Comparative Advantage∗

This paper empirically investigates the effect of product cycle on comparative advantage for countries with different knowledge capital endowment. Product cycle is the exogenous nature of technology evolution in each industry. Longer product cycle means new discovery takes longer time to arise. Meanwhile the imitation of existing innovation is easier in industries with longer product cycles. St...

Strategic Technology Adoption and Hedging under Incomplete Markets∗

We investigate the implications of technological innovation and non-diversifiable risk on entrepreneurial entry and optimal portfolio choice. In a real options model where two risk-averse individuals strategically decide on technology adoption, we show that the impact of non-diversifiable risk on the option timing decision is ambiguous and depends on the frequency of technological change. Compa...

Patents and Copyrights : Do the Benefits Exceed the Costs ?

Patents and copyrights are forms of immaterial “property” that grant to their owners exclusive control over the production and sale of a specified product—a literary or artistic work in the case of copy rights, an invention or productive process in the case of patents. Though these concepts are subsumed under the broader heading of “intelle c tual property,” they are not completely analogous ...

Entrepreneurial Finance and the Non - diversifiable Risk ∗

Entrepreneurs face significant non-diversifiable idiosyncratic business risks. In a dynamic incomplete-markets model of entrepreneurial finance, we show that such risks have important implications for their interdependent consumption/saving, portfolio choice, financing, investment, and endogenous default/cash-out decisions. Even though more risk-averse entrepreneurs default earlier for given de...
